A real time software system may be an application that is considered mission critical. The deadlines must be kept without regard to any other factors. There are such things as hard real time and soft real time. Hard real time is used when it is critical that a reaction is acknowledged within an extremely strict deadline. This can also be known as an immediate real time system. If an operation is not completed by its deadline it is considered useless and may ultimately cause a critical failure of a complete system. On the other hand a soft real-time system will tolerate such lateness, and it may respond with a lower service quality.
